As some of you may now have heard, MSN will be working with us on the World Quizzing Championships. MSN have a search engine, MSN Search, that they will be promoting through the World Quizzing Championships, which is a tie-in that sits very nicely with quiz. So, the WQC will now be known as the MSN Search World Quizzing Championships .
We are working on a multi-year sponsorship deal with them and are very excited indeed about the obvious opportunities this opens up for quiz, for instance the organisation of a television broadcast WQC final with the best quiz players of the world all brought together in a central location (say Las Vegas or the Bahama's :-) )
Over the next few weeks, we will be telling you in detail how we will be developing the MSN Search World Quizzing Championships, so watch this space!

The search is on for the World's Best Quiz Questions. We’ve all been to quizzes, whether they are work competitions, in pubs or bars, or for charity. Once in a while, we hear a question and think ‘Wow! I didn’t know that’, or ‘d’oh, I should have guessed that’. Or perhaps they just made us laugh.
Whatever the reason that you liked a question, we’d love to know about it.

'The Day After'
England European champion after a real thriller
In a final with a script that only Hitchcock himself could have devised, England has beaten Belgium with the penalties.
After intermediate score of 10-10, 16-16, 26-20 (to Belgium) and 35-35, England seemed to take a decisive lead with 41-47. With one subject to go the score was 47-56 to England, with 3 questions remaining on 3 points each. The 3 questions (on 'French Wine') were however impeccably answered by the Belgian squad which resulted in a 56-56 tie.
Three extra questions were needed to decide between victory and defeat. And there England clinched it: 3-1.
A salient detail: in the final England managed to answer 22 questions correctly, Belgium... 23.
Earlier, in first semi final Belgium had eliminated Estonia with 66-41. At the beginnning a surprise seemed to be in the making as Estonia swiftly took the lead with 14-6, 20-12 and half way through 26-24.
In the second semi a brave Dutch team stayed close to Britain for a while (4-6, 12-14) but then they had to let them go: 18-30 half way through and then 21-45 and finally 30-54.
In a friendly game the Celtic Selection beat Norway 68-28 (half way score 20-16).
Kevin Ashman wins individual tournament
In the individual quiz (with direct elimination for first place), ruling world champion Kevin Ashman managed to take the measure of all competition. Steadily at table 1 he won (in order) against Arthur Kolks (NL), Patrick Andries (B), Walter Deckx (B), Reimond Eycken (B), Derk de Graaff (NL), Indrek Salis (Est) and in the final against Nico Pattyn (score 9-8).
The result of the first 8 (provisional) was:
1. Kevin Ashman (seed1)
2. Nico Pattyn (seed3)
3. Pat Gibson (seed2)
4. Indrek Salis (Est)
5. Derk de Graaf (NL)
6. Lieven Vandenbrande (seed10) (B)
7. Jan Deckx (B)
8. Nick Mills
More news soon.

The format is special: each contestant gets a number from 1 to 128 and takes his place on one of the 64 tables. In the first round he will play his neighbour at the table. Whoever gets most answers right in that round, will go to tables 1-32 and the other one to 33-64, where they will play their next adversories. After 7 rounds everyone is sorted from position 1 to 128. We will also keep track of the total number of correct answers.
